Pointe Claire, a quiet neighborhood situated in the West Island of Montreal is home to a number of small-scale businesses. There is a West Island, which is commonly referred to as being a distinct "island" to the west of Montreal by those who are not familiar with it, in reality includes everything east of Lachine. Amanda Brugel was born there and that's the truth. She only spent a short period of time there. Brugel began her life in Courtice in the outskirts of Oshawa. Her early ambition was to become a dancer however, her growth spurt led to that she grew beyond her dance partner. According to an article by the Toronto Star, she confessed, "In heels I am 6 feet 1 inches." After I grew beyond the male partners that I was working with, I quit. Many ex-dancers switch to acting. As in Brugel's case her encouragement came from an instructor of drama in high school. The teacher suggested that she go after a role in the school's annual production. After trying out, she got the role of leading woman for the role of Rita in Anne of Green Gables. The show led her to receive the award of a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theater Program and graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2000.In the more than 20 years that followed, Brugel has landed roles in more than 60 productions in both the small and the large screens, drawing the most interest when she was offered the role of Rita on the award-winning TV series, The Handmaid's Tale
